• have the children tear off 4 to 5 inch lengths of masking tape and completely cover the opening at the top and bottom of the cups
• using 3 to 4 inch lengths of masking tape, completely cover the outside of the cups
• brush shoe polish all over the masking tape covered cups and then wipe off with rags

• piece of coarse sandpaper (we used a 4inch x 6inch (ish) piece, but you could use whatever size you like)
• crayola crayons (just your ordinary crayons).

Instructions:

• draw an African scene on the sandpaper with crayons
• Don’t worry if the images are very basic. That’s what cave drawings look like.
• press hard on the crayons.

The performance came just one week after Xtina botched “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XLV (luckily, Kelly Clarkson’s rendition this year went smoothly), and it seemed like the “Beautiful” singer and “Voice” judge had fully redeemed herself after the debacle, delivering a fantastic vocal performance … until she stumbled onstage, sending gossips into a tizzy that the singer may have been, we’ll say, out of sorts during the performance despite much evidence to the contrary. Or maybe people just like a good near-fall? People get very excited when an entertainer loses her footing ? don’t they, Madonna?

Anyway, while everyone tried to make Xtina’s mini-tumble a bigger story than it was, the ladies earned a richly deserved standing ovation for their tribute to Franklin, who was rather ill at the time but has since recovered, lost a bunch of weight, gotten engaged and ended that engagement. (A year in Hollywood time is like five years in normal person time … maybe that’s why everyone is so afraid of getting older!)

Justin Bieber’s medley performance began with an acoustic strum through “Baby” but quickly segued into a raucous take on “Never Say Never,” complete with breakdancing ninja acrobats, fire breathers and a cameo rap by “Karate Kid” star Jaden Smith. Biebs’ mentor Usher even joined in on the fun for a pop-and-lock-heavy dance-off to his hit “OMG.”

But the real story with Bieber at last year’s Grammys was that he lost. To Esperanza Spalding. A critically acclaimed but otherwise unknown jazz performer. Bieber didn’t take the loss so well but his fans went even crazier, expressing the profound sadness they felt and bearing witness to their idol’s defeat by hacking Spalding’s Wikipedia page and changing her middle name to both “Justin” and “Quesadilla.” One fan wrote, “Justin Bieber deserved it go die in a hole. Who the heck are you anyway?” while another scribbled, “So the Esperanza Spalding has only 8 thousand followers on twitter and how many does Justin Bieber has?”

It seems someone forgot to tell the Belieber army that the Grammys are not a popularity contest (well, they’re not supposed to be, anyway) and that one’s amount of Twitter followers is not taken into account when deciding the winners. Duly noted!

If you needed further proof that a lot can change in just a single year, look no further than Katy Perry’s performance at last year’s ceremony. Though one would think a sweet performance like Katy’s would shut the gossip mill down for at least a little while, the couple was already back to defending their strange union less than two months later when Brand co-hosted “Live!” with Kelly Ripa. By year’s end, Perry and Brand’s marriage was officially no more, and it made re-watching her performance from last year for the purposes of this article, um, kind of awkward.

No, no one at your Grammy party spiked your drink. Cee Lo Green, wearing a crazy red bear suit and a rainbow fan of feathers (think peacock), really did perform his Grammy-nominated smash “Forget You” backed by a bunch of singing and dancing Muppets while Oscar-winning home health guru Gwyneth Paltrow writhed atop his piano. Oddly, the whole thing worked like gangbusters and was a big old ball of fun. (And when was the last time anyone associated the word “fun” with Gwyneth Paltrow? Such is the funky power of Cee Lo.)

This year’s show has the potential to outdo last year’s in the water-cooler department with Rihanna and Chris Brown both set to perform under the same roof for the first time since, well, you know … in addition to plenty of interesting collabos, including a special electronic dance music performance set to feature the Foo Fighters (right?), and whatever Lady Gaga decides to get into.

Stanton recently sat down with MTV News to talk about the upcoming release of the movie. It’s been a project that has been floating around Hollywood for a while now, as Edgar Rice Burroughs’s “Barsoom” series has been the inspiration for many other science fiction projects — like “Star Wars” and “Flash Gordon” — and deserved to get the big screen treatment as well. Stanton said that he felt that we are finally at a point when Hollywood is capable of doing John Carter’s story justice, and that is why he pushed to get the movie made now.

“The only reason that I’m attached to this thing and it got on to the screen is because of the fandom,” Stanton explained. “It was not a career move, it was not a filmmaker choice. If it takes my influence with Disney from other things to convince them this is a property that needs to get on to the screen, then fine, I’ll use it.”

Earlier I wrote that the movie was “mostly” live-action because it’s actually very CGI-heavy. From the Mars setting with its alien inhabitants to the giant beasts seen in some of the promotion for the film, Stanton said he had to use every dollar of his reported $250 million budget. And, if he’s to be believed, it’s well worth it.

“I think once you see the film, you’ll realize how big of a budget it is, it’s all on that screen. It’s a fully realized world with tons of history, tons of cities and characters and cultural things, and fantastical ideas. And all of them are part of what makes it attractive in the books, in the 11 books, and there’s just nothing cheap about it,” Stanton said.

He added, “I just don’t think technology could even do what you want to have put on the screen for most of the time Hollywood’s been around, and it’s only recently that you could possibly fit the economics of it into a box.”

That’s likely why he’s taking advantage of that popularity to develop a project for himself. Variety is reporting that Fassbender and “Public Enemies” scribe Ronan Bennett are working on a movie about the Irish myth Cuchulainn.

Two More To Michael Bay’s “Pain And Gain”?
Variety has the news that funnyman Rob Corddry is the latest actor to join Michael Bay’s next project, “Pain and Gain.” He’ll be joining Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Ed Harris in the film. Corddry will play John Mese, a former competitive body builder who is Wahlberg’s boss at a gym. Meanwhile, Latino Review is reporting that John Turturro is also in talks to join the flick.

Nonso Anozie Plays “Ender’s Game”
Three more stars have joined the cast of “Ender’s Game.” Deadline is reporting that “The Grey” star Nonso Anozie will play Sergeant Dap. In addition, Stevie Ray Dallimore will play Ender’s father and Andrea Powell will play his mother. The film is set to hit theaters on March 15, 2013.

Kyle Chandler Will Hunt Bin Laden
“Friday Night Lights” star Kyle Chandler is the latest actor to join Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled movie about the hunt to find Osama Bin Laden. Deadline reports that he joins a cast that also includes Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Edgar Ramirez and Mark Strong. The flick is due to hit theaters on December 19.

Jim Caviezel Joins “The Tomb”
“The Tomb” just gained another major player. Producer Mark Canton told The Matthew Aaron Show (via Collider) that Jim Caviezel has joined Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in the film. Apparently Caviezel will play the warden at the prison that the action duo escape from, and will be the antagonist of the film.

We’ll know in good time. But for now, the singer/actress tweeted out a photo teasing a super-secret special project she is working on with MTV. The photo features her wrists, emblazoned with her tattoos that read “Stay Strong.” The picture offers up a couple of hints: the date “3.6.2012″ and the hashtag #staystrong.

“Lovatics-I wanted to tell you FIRST about a special I worked on with @MTV,” she tweeted. “It premieres March 6th at 10pm!! #staystrong.”

Lovato first showed off the ink back in March 2011, just two months after she left an Illinois treatment center to deal with personal issues including an eating disorder and cutting.

“The journey that I went through and the support of my fans was so meaningful to me that I wanted to thank my fans in a way that I know can never be forgotten,” the singer said in 2011.

“It’s something that my fans were actually drawing on their wrists while I was still in treatment,” she explained about the significance of her tattoos. “Some people even got tattoos of it, so I wanted to show you guys that I will never forget the support that you guys gave me.”

Since returning to the spotlight, she has focused on her music career, including her 2011 album, Unbroken, which launched her empowering hit single “Skyscraper.” Her next single is “Give Your Heart a Break.”

Lovato has become a voice for young people struggling with personal issues. In December, she visited and spoke to patients at the Timberline Knolls Center, where she had received treatment.

“To be able to share my story and let them know that it gets easier … Life is beautiful … you are worthy of it,” Lovato said. “Please say a prayer for all of those struggling with eating disorders, self-harm, mood disorders and substance abuse.”

“I’ve been trying to do a movie set in the water for a long time. My dad was a naval historian, he used to drag me to every Navy museum in the world, anywhere we could go,” Berg told MTV News at Toy Fair. “I’ve always wanted to do a movie about the Navy.”

But it was more than that. Berg said that he also has always wanted to do a big movie, something even bigger than “Hancock.” Berg felt that it was his time to do a summer blockbuster, and that “Battleship” was the film to do it with.

“I call these movies, they’re like kind of ‘super’ movies now and they go out all around the world. Movies like ‘Transformers,’ ‘G.I. Joe,’ ‘Battleship;’ these films have such big reach. For me it made sense,” Berg said. “Now to actually see all this kind of cross-marketing and see with the Hasbro machine kicking in, it’s kind of awesome.”

“Yeah, big deal!” Aniston said, insisting that most of the talk around the scene was just sensational. “Isn’t that a good, fun headline? That’s what happens.”

“Wanderlust” ? fans can preview an exclusive clip when we launch our “First” special Wednesday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com ? takes place at a commune, where two down-on-their-luck New Yorkers, played by Aniston and Rudd, seek refuge. And when you consider that “Wet, Hot American Summer” helmer David Wain was behind the camera, nudity may seem tame. For Aniston, the scene was just another part of the job.

“At that point, we had been shooting the movie for two months, two-and-a-half months, and the amount of things that we were asked to do that we were just like ‘All right,’” Aniston said. “At that point, that was like putting on my shoes.”

The duo share the experience of onscreen skin, a fact Aniston felt compelled to share. “You’ve shown your butt,” she said to Rudd.

“Many times,” he replied.

“And onscreen as well,” Aniston joked. “In the makeup chair, he always never had clothes on.”

“I had to get dressed for the shots,” Rudd replied. “But when we weren’t shooting, I was hanging brain, as it were.”

For Aniston, nudity has to matter for where the character is heading in the story, and a crazy, purposeless nude scene would never work. “I think it depends on what the movie is. It felt like it would be gratuitous to do that in a movie like this and it would be more distracting from the movie and what was happening to the character,” she explained. “It would all be about, ‘Oh, you’re naked, so it’s boobs onscreen,’ so it would totally lose the fun and the empowering moment [my character], Linda, was having in that scene.”

One of Aniston’s co-stars, however, does show a fair amount of skin, even if he’s wearing a prosthetic penis.

“Joe Lo Truglio, the first night he came out with his prosthetic penis, within five minutes we were all touching it,” Aniston revealed. “We were touching it, and we were examining it. It was just so interesting. It was just right there, underneath it. I think first night of shooting, I could resist, there was the beginning of many, many butt slaps.”

Fellow British artist Jessie J shined on her first Grammy red carpet, turning heads in a gray Julien Macdonald gown. “I just wanted to wear something that I don’t usually wear, which is silver, something long and very heavy,” Jessie told MTV News. “I feel like a disco ball at the event.”

Katy Perry was feeling blue at the Grammys, matching her blue hairstyle to a light-blue, long-sleeved Elie Saab gown. “One of my absolute favorites of the night was Katy Perry,” Celebuzz producer Rachel Maresca told MTV News. “She paired her bold, blue hair with a very light-blue Elie Saab lace gown. She looked stunning, and it’s a more subdued look for her. We don’t always see that out of her, but it is very glamorous.”

Another statement dress belonged to Fergie, who called her Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown her “safe choice,” which it was far from. The vibrant orange lace gown allowed her black bra and panties to see through, but according to Fergie, when Gaultier gives you a custom look, you have to wear it.

“When Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown comes and it’s shipped to you and it fits, you wear it,” Fergie told our own Sway Calloway.

Yet, out of all these amazing artists, it seems the fashion night belonged to Rihanna. Jaws dropped as she worked the carpet in a one-of-a-kind Armani dress that she helped design. With a plunging neckline and a deep halter, this dress hugged every curve to perfection.
